Centre for Research on Aquatic Resources (CRAR)

Kuttanad, commonly called the "Rice Bowl of Kerala", is a unique place in the world. Here, human effort has created an ecosystem where paddy (rice) is cultivated below sea level. It has been recognized as a Globally Important Heritage Agricultural System by the United Nations. The Centre for Research on Aquatic Resources (CRAR) has been established with a view to undertake research, consultancy, extension and human resource development in areas that are less focused but need attention. The Centre conducts research focusing on aquatic resources of Kerala, with special reference to Kuttanad, Kerala, India. It is attached to the Post Graduate and Research Department of Zoology of Sanatana Dharama College (SDC), Alleppey, Kerala, India. The College, established in 1946, is one of the oldest and largest grant-in-aid institutions under the University of Kerala. It is recognized by UGC and 2 f and 12 B of the UGC, Government of India and Assessed and Accredited by NAAC with A Grade.
